First Post Guide to this Blog

What is this blog about?
This blog is both my attempt to stimulate the online popular literary discussion of plays, as well as an outlet for writing.  It will attempt to begin conversations through a series of posts for each play: A post about the Author, a post about the play, and a followup topic post, generally on a subject relating to the play and hopefully ripe for discussion.  Or at least enough to fulfill my quota of shouting into the void.

Posts might include information such as:

  • General background
  • Years active
  • Historical setting
  • Play-specific information

Do you have any blog values?
  1. I value the work of others and when I build upon it I acknowledge them
  2. I create an environment where everyone can have their say without fear of censorship
  3. I respect the privacy of others in my blogging and don’t reveal private conversations or contact details
  4. If I make a mistake I publicly acknowledge this and correct it
  5. I will always make it clear if I’m benefiting from something that I write
  6. I value people and will not blog about them in degrading way

Who are you, and why should I believe what you say?
I’m a 28 year old Ben who misses reading plays, and writing and talking about theatre in a risk-free atmosphere.  I have zero professional credentials other than I received high marks in my undergrad History of Theatre classes, and have collected a massive play library that I need to justify somehow.

You should believe me because I cared enough to start a blog about this.

What is your posting schedule?
My 2-week posting schedule is as such, we hope:

What purpose does this blog serve?
I want to provide what wasn’t available to me as a young tech-inclined theatre student - a way to connect and converse with others in an informal setting about reading plays.  Anyone can contribute, and posts from theatre professionals will hopefully make it into the rotation.  Also, posts from people like you!  Got an interesting take on a play?  Building a play?  Executing a play?  Blah blah blah a play?  Leave a comment or email me!
This blog will also serve to hone my writing skills, and eventually, my researching skills.  For the moment I will be writing informally, citing minimal resources (if any at all), simply for the pleasure of reading, thinking, writing, and intelligent discussion.
So... basically, I’m doing it all for myself.  Great motivation, though!
How do you work?
I utilize a slapdash approach to my analysis, from worksheet questionnaires collected in undergrad classes to more formal methods, such as those suggested in David Ball’s Backwards and Forwards.  Some posts will eventually touch on how I work, after I get this up and running and refine my madness methods.
Why write about plays?
No one else (that I can find) is blogging plays and summaries.  Insta-niche!  Could be because no one’s interested, but I’m choosing to be optimistic...

The thought of doing this makes me want to kill myself to death with a spoon.  Why, for the love of pickled Jesus, do you want to commit to something like this?!

One name: Dr. Dennis Beck.  He made a believer out of me that reading plays really is, after all, for my own good.  The rest just kind of went from there.

Do you have any other, more normal, hobbies?  Or are you a hermit recluse somewhere with translucent skin who smells like cats and old afghans?

Sure I do (have hobbies, not translucent skin)!  I cook, read science fiction, am writing a play, and art frequently around my home.  I have a calico named Wobbly Bob, whom I sometimes take to the park near my house to hunt bugs, and I have an amazing roommate named Ally (maybe you'll meet her later) who likes Thai Dragon Fruit Febreze and is so graciously letting me set all this stuff up on her computer while I wait for my charger to get here.  Thanks Ally!

This blog is dedicated to my Bradley buddies.
